I am a painter, potter, sculptor, and art educator. I graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Sculpture and an MFA in Painting from University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. I have lived in the south coast of Massachusetts most of my life and love being out in nature. My work is informed by this beautiful coastal environment and the natural objects I encounter. My pockets are always full of shells and the bits I discover along my walks. Through deep observation and intimate response to the natural world, I find a bounty of inspiration for my paintings. My subject matter can often reference the human form, gesture, memory, emotion, sensuality, or simply capture the energy of a time and place. When painting, I am compelled to artiulate a fierce passion for life, female strenght, and fecundity.

Fruits, Veggies, Flowers

“Pepper Tango” (oil on canvas) 44” x 58”

“Often I am fueled by my love of the summer garden. It’s bounty and fruitfulness excites me. The garden is lush with vegetation, blossoms, tons of veggies and of course sensuous peppers. These paintings are not still life works but rather portraits, conversations, and interactions.”

“Every shell which speaks to me enters my psyche and provokes an inspirational spark. I am particulary drawn to the broken shell because of the beauty in the spare, broken forms which create natural abstractions and beckons the eye into internal recesses. I am also attracted to the splayed open, hinged shells, so invititing and fragile with their connective membrane.

When I work from the natural world,. I ingest this experience and then synthesize it into my own expression. My use of paint is visceral. I have an appetite for color, manipulation of paint and subject matter that grabs the eye and stirs the unconscious. It is my hope that through viewing my paintings one will enter my world and share my experiences. “

Plein air Landscapes and Seascapes

“Plein air painting is invigorating. To be out in nature, chasing the movement of clouds, water, light, and vegetation is an exciting challenge. The goal is to capture the essence of what I am seeing and sensing in that place, at that time of day and season. It could be a windy, sunny, autumn day in the marsh or a quiet, misty, muggy, summer morning at the harbor. When I work from the natural world, I ingest this experience and then synthesize it into my own expressive experience with paint.”
